On 19 April 2017, the Australian Government announced a range of changes to temporary and permanent Australian skilled migration visas. Some changes commenced immediately, and others are to be introduced over time and until March 2018. This means that the employer sponsored visa application process is more complex and could take more time.

Temporary Skilled Migration
Changes have been announced to current temporary skilled migration visas. These include abolishing the Temporary Work (Skilled) (457) Visa and replacing it with a new Temporary Skilled Shortage Visa. The Australian Government is still to release information about this new visa, which will commence from March 2018.
At present, applications for skilled visas in Australia can still be lodged under the Temporary Work (Skilled) (457) visa program. This visa allows the holder to remain in Australia temporarily to work for their employer sponsored visa in Australia in their nominated occupation for up to four years.
For people who have more specialised occupations and will only stay temporarily in Australia, there are other Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa options.
For people wanting to both work and travel, there are options for Working Holiday and Work and Holiday visas that our migration agent in Cairns can discuss with you. These come with certain conditions such as a limitation of six (6) months’ work with one employer. There are opportunities to apply for a second Working Holiday visa or an employer sponsored visa in Australia. It is important that you know which visa option is the best one for you.
Permanent Skilled Migration
There are employer sponsored permanent skilled migration visas, such as the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) Visa and the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa. There are also independent visas for people without an employer sponsored visa for Australia, such as the Skilled (Independent) Visa. There are also permanent skilled migration visas for people who are sponsored by an Australian State or Territory Government, like the Skilled state (Nominated) Visa.
These visas all have their own eligibility requirements that must be met before your application can be lodged. This also applies to the employer sponsored visas, with Australian businesses needing to meet certain requirements before they can lodge an employer sponsored visa application and having certain obligations once the visa has been granted.
